Yes. Shopify themes are a one-time purchase. You pay once, you own that theme on that store, and there is no monthly fee to keep using it. That applies to themes bought from the Shopify Theme Store and to almost every theme sold by independent studios, including ours.
That is the short answer. The longer answer has three details that catch people out, and one of them costs real money if you find out late.
One purchase covers one store
This is the detail most people miss. A theme licence is tied to the store where you bought it. If you open a second store later, you buy the theme again for that store. You are not buying a personal licence to use the theme anywhere; you are licensing it to one storefront.
That matters if you are planning a second brand, a wholesale storefront, or a separate regional store. It also matters on Shopify Plus, where each storefront in a multi-store setup needs its own licence rather than sharing one.
Transferring a theme between stores is possible but deliberately narrow. Shopify's own guidance requires the account owner emails to match, requires you to be the registered owner of both stores, and requires the original store to be closed permanently as part of the move. In practice, if both stores are staying open, plan on a second purchase.
Updates are included, with a caveat worth reading
A licensed theme receives updates and support. An unlicensed copy, meaning a theme file passed around rather than bought, does not, which is the practical reason pirated theme files are a bad trade even when they work at first: your store slowly falls behind on fixes and platform changes with no way back.
The caveat is that "updates" means different things to different sellers. Some include every future version indefinitely. Some include the version you bought plus fixes. Some charge for major releases. It is a fair question to ask before you buy, and a seller who cannot answer it plainly is telling you something.
Ours are free for life. Buy the theme once, get every future version, no renewal.
Switching themes does not delete the one you paid for
A common worry: if I buy this theme and later want something else, have I wasted the money? No. Themes live in your admin as files. Publishing a different one moves your storefront over, and the previous theme stays in your library. You can switch back, keep it as a seasonal alternative, or ignore it.
Your products, orders, customers and pages are not part of the theme either, so they survive the switch. We covered exactly what does and does not move in switching Shopify themes without losing your products.
So where do the recurring costs actually come from?
If themes are one-time, why do so many stores have a growing monthly bill? Two places, neither of them the theme.
Apps. The average store adds apps to patch gaps: page builders, review widgets, size charts, upsell tools. Individually small, collectively the largest recurring line on most stores. A page builder at $29 a month is $348 a year, every year, and the day you stop paying, the pages it built stop working.
Subscription themes and builders. A smaller category, but they exist: storefront products that charge monthly for the design itself. The test is simple. Ask what happens to your storefront if you stop paying. If the answer is "it stops working," you are renting your storefront rather than owning it.
This is the real argument for buying a theme that does more out of the box: every feature built into the theme is a subscription you never start. We put the full pricing maths in what a Shopify theme should cost.
How ours work
MX is $75 and LX is $150, both one-time, both with free lifetime updates, both licensed to one store the same way Theme Store purchases are. If you would rather not install it yourself, we set it up on your store for $250 on MX or $500 on LX, which is also one-time.
No subscription, no renewal, no feature tiers to upgrade into later. If you want to see what you are buying before you buy it, the LX demo store is open with the password ntmdemo. Open it on your phone, which is where most of your customers will see it.
FAQ
Are Shopify themes a one-time purchase or a subscription?
One-time. Shopify Theme Store themes and most independent themes are bought once per store with no recurring fee. A small number of storefront products do charge monthly, so check before you buy.
Can I use one theme licence on two Shopify stores?
No. A licence covers the store it was bought on. A second store needs its own purchase, including on Shopify Plus, where each storefront is licensed separately.
Do I have to pay for theme updates?
It depends on the seller. Licensed themes receive updates and support, but whether major new versions are included varies. Ours include free lifetime updates with the one-time price.
What happens to my theme if I switch to a different one?
Nothing. It stays in your theme library and can be republished later. Your products, orders and customers are not stored in the theme, so they are unaffected.
Can I transfer a theme I bought to another store?
Only in narrow circumstances. Shopify requires matching account owner emails, ownership of both stores, and permanent closure of the original store. If both stores stay open, expect to buy a second licence.
